Research Activities in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering

The size of the Department in the context of research active faculty, postdoctoral researchers and registered research students makes it one of the largest in the country. One of the major strengths of its research activities is that they are diverse and multidisciplinary covering many aspects of Engineering and Science and therefore extend well beyond the traditional boundaries of Electronic and Computer Engineering. Examples of these areas include Marine Robotics, Optical Communications, Embedded Systems and Distributed Computing, Optical Fibre Sensors, Biomedical Electronics, Semiconductor Technology, Wireless Access etc.

The challenges offered to graduates through embarking on a research career and engaging in cutting edge research as is the case with any of the ECE Department's research centres are many and often completely new. However, the benefits gained from working within a vibrant and internationally recognised research centre are equally high in terms of interacting with other researchers of the highest calibre and career progression and opportunities to engage in post-masters or postdoctoral research within an academic or industrial research environment.

The Department has enjoyed a high level of success in gaining financial support for its research activities from a wide range of funding sources both national and international including Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) Enterprise Ireland, Higher Education Authority (HEA) and the European Union (EU). Over the last three academic years the Department's research income secured in terms of new contracts has exceeded €4 Million on each occasion and these significant sums have been matched by a correspondingly high level of first class research outputs (International Peer Reviewed Journals, Books etc) over the same period. During this period the Department has also created many links with other National and International research Institutions who are themselves internationally recognised as well as industries involved at the cutting edge of technological research and development. The ECE Department is committed to sustaining its high quality research profile in both national and international arenas through supporting its existing activities and fostering strategically significant new areas as they are identified.

Details of the Department's research activities can be found in the pages associated with the respective research centres. These can be accessed using the links below.
