LM634 Programme of Study

The Master of Engineering in Information and Network Security is a one-year, full-time taught postgraduate programme spanning a single academic year and requires full-time attendance on campus.  The course comprises ten modules, taught over two academic semesters, Autumn and Spring and a major project (practicum) that spans the year. The total credit-weighting of the course is 90 ECTS credits.

Module Summary Descriptions

Cryptography and Security Fundamentals

Introduces communication security, vulnerabilities, attacks and their classification. Introduces classical and modern cryptographic techniques and demonstrates the application of cryptography in the provision of identification, information confidentiality, message integrity, digital signatures, etc. for modern e-commerce applications.

Cryptographic Mathematics

Introduces the essential concepts of number theory to underpin cryptographic algorithm techniques: Divisibility and Primes. Modular Arithmetic. Primitive roots. Primality tests. Quadratic reciprocity. Elliptic Curves mod p. Discrete Logarithm.

Multimedia Communications

Provide a unified view of multimedia communications and networking infrastructures, as well as understanding of how data is represented and reliably transmitted over different media.  Study of Internet and world-wide web. Study of main subject areas associated with multimedia communications - applications, networks, protocols and standards.

C++ Programming

Syntax and semantics of the C++ procedural subset. Objects and Classes; Function and Operator Overloading: function polymorphism. Inheritance and Polymorphism, Input and Output, Memory Management, The Standard Template Library.

Software Engineering

Object Oriented Analysis/Design, Use Cases. Design Patterns. Software Reuse. Overview of Object Oriented Programming Languages. Individual Project/Case Study. Team Project in the area of Software Design for Advanced Communication System

Biometrics

Fundamentals of biometrics; verification, identification and authentication with biometrics,  individuality of biometric data;  performance of biometrics with emphasis on  basic system errors, performance metrics, testing and evaluation; enrolment  and biometric databases policies; integration of biometric data, attacks on biometric systems; standards, privacy and legal issues

Data Forensics

Introduces the concepts and structures of computer operating systems, with emphasis on file systems for the storage of data on hard disks and related media. Equips the students with knowledge of information storage, data preservation, and the analytical skills necessary to investigate potentially compromised systems. Specialist tools are studied for the forensic investigation of on-line and off-line stored information.

Communication and Security Protocols

Introduces security services and cryptographic protocols used for information and system security, in areas such as wireless networks, e-commerce and the Internet. Provides an understanding of security protocol design techniques and formal methods for evaluation of the reliability of security protocols.

Host and Network Security

Introduction to security attack and defence techniques. Students will be aware of the major attacks on information in computer networks and how to plan for the deployment of secure architectures and security management tools. The student will be able to advise on security criteria and vulnerabilities and will be able to design a secure operating network and analyse its vulnerabilities.

Web-Based Application Design

Introduces distributed application architectures, current and evolving web-based services; as well as application design principles and techniques using available web-based technologies. Reliability and security issues of implementing distributed applications are addressed in order to identify potential security threats due to sloppy implementation.

Master of Engineering Project

The course project (practicum) enables students gain experience in undertaking a significant engineering task, which will involve research into a selected topic in the area of Information and network security, along with advanced design and implementation. The project commences in the Autumn semester of the Master's year and continues through to the end of the following Summer semester.
